East Asia, Japan, Edo era, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A lacquered and gilt wood sculpture of a Daruma or Buddhist monk, sitting with both hands placed in his lap, wearing flowing robes with drapery folds cascading over his head and body. He gazes forward with a furrowed brow as he contemplates some deep thought. He is seated on a chair that has nice remains of gilt on the upper backrest, and his shoes are tucked neatly underneath. The underside has an inscription in Japanese characters which may name or describe this monk’s identity, since portraits of famous religious teachers or monks was popular in Zen Buddhism during this time. Size: 8.8" L x 3.5" W x 8" H (22.4 cm x 8.9 cm x 20.3 cm); gold quality: 50% to 63% (equivalent to 12K to 15k+)

  • Condition: Repaired with adhesive: rear legs of chair, and seat support under the figure have fissures and glue adhesive, but nearly indiscernible and does not affect presentation. Fading and losses to pigments and gold gilt. Chips and nicks to surface and stable pressure fissures. Overall great condition.
