Description:

East Asia, Japan, late Edo Period, ca. early to mid-19th century CE. A ceremonial fly whisk (known as a hossu) with a slender wooden handle covered in black lacquer (urushi) and capped with two cylindrical brass fittings. Suspended from the top end is the fly whisk mane formed from several dozen strips of paper (washi) that are knotted at the top. The hossu was used by both samurai warriors and Buddhist priests as a practical means of driving away insects as well as a symbolic means of ridding them of distraction or desire. Size: 13" L (handle) x 13.5" H (mane fully extended) (33 cm x 34.3 cm)
