Description:

East Asia, Japan, late Edo Period, ca. 19th century CE. A fabulous wooden sculpture of the bodhisattva Senju Kannon or Thousand-armed Kannon, here shown with 14 arms - the rest being implied - as he sits atop a double-lotus throne with a huge mandorla rising at his back. The peaceful deity is heavily adorned with a metal tiara and necklace, beaded earrings, and flowing robes intricately adorned with gilt geometric and vegetal motifs. Two pairs of the god's hands are joined together at his front, while numerous other arms reach out from his body, extending Kannon’s all-encompassing compassion. Traditionally represented holding various instruments and/or with an eye on each palm, the Thousand-armed Kannon grew in popularity in Japan as a bodhisattva capable of preventing and curing physical ailments, such as blindness. Size: 5.4" L x 8.1" W x 15.4" H (13.7 cm x 20.6 cm x 39.1 cm)
