Description:

Est Asia, Japan, Meiji to Showa period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A remarkable Bizen stoneware statue of an emaciated Shussan Shaka Buddha (Shakyamuni), shown in a royal ease pose (one knee bent upward). His skinny physique is from fasting in a mountain retreat for six years, only to realize that this ascetic practice of meditating and fasting was not the path to enlightenment. This Shaka Buddha retreating into the mountains is part of Chinese and Japanese Buddhist tradition. He sits on a large leaf as the base, with an empty pot and tied bundle. His finger and toe nails are long and pointy from neglect, and his hair is long - an overall unkempt appearance. The surface is glazed in a dark brown, intentionally to resemble bronze. Size: 6.25" L x 4.5" W x 7" H (15.9 cm x 11.4 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
