Description:

Western Europe, Italy, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A marvelous marble planter or cistern of a rectangular cuboid form boasting an action-packed relief of a Bacchanalia on one side. The dramatic scene features Silenus - companion and tutor of Dionysus, Greek god of wine - at the center of the affair, drunkenly falling off his donkey, his arms around 2 satyrs with pointed ears who attempt to support his portly body as the Greek god Pan - depicted traditionally as a half-goat half-man - leads the animal forward whilst wielding a shepherd's crook behind his head. A panther - a symbol of Dionysus - creeps behind the zoomorphic deity. Behind Silenus and the satyrs, on the left side of the relief, an additional satyr converses with a putto while carrying a vat of wine with vines of grapes atop his head. The rim and base are slightly flared, and the remaining sides of the planter showcase bare surfaces of smooth, creamy white marble. Size: 17.5" L x 9.1" W x 9.1" H (44.4 cm x 23.1 cm x 23.1 cm)

The Neoclassical period saw immense northern European interest in the Classical world, in part inspired by the budding science of archaeology. Artists looked to the deep past for inspiration, but brought an imaginative sensibility to their depictions of it, as seen in this relief.
