Description:

Native American, Eastern United States, Iroquois or Seneca tribe, Frontier Period, ca. early to mid-19th century CE. A gorgeous smoking pipe, hand-cgarved from caramel-hued hardwood, in the form of an upturned right hand. The hand features a mouthpiece bored into the back of the wrist, and all five fingers curl upward and grasp an octagonal cylinder which doubles as the tobacco receptacle. Within the receptacle is a hammered copper lining that generated more heat and protected the interior wooden surfaces. Pipes like this were oftentimes carved by men and women as a means of entertainment, and the finished product typically had some functionality. A beautiful example covered in mottled tan and brown patina. Size: 5.75" L x 3.6" W x 3.7" H (14.6 cm x 9.1 cm x 9.4 cm).
