Description:

Native American / First Nations, Canada, Montreal, Mohawk / Iroquois people, ca. 1870s to 1900s CE. A superb beaded whimsey pillow or large pincushion, crafted from velvet and cotton, and adorned with intricate raised beadwork. The piece is densely stuffed with sawdust, newspaper, or possibly cloth scraps. Iroquois women, particularly from the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy), transformed their traditional sewing and bead working skills into a source of livelihood, leading to a flourishing cottage industry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These beaded whimseys, often in the form of pillows, pincushions, or wall hangings, became popular souvenirs at tourist destinations like Niagara Falls and other sites near Native communities. The designs frequently featured floral patterns, birds, hearts, and short messages which appealed to Victorian tastes. These whimsical beaded pieces were cherished as unique mementos and novelty items, and highly collectable today. Size: 10.25" L x 9" W (26 cm x 22.9 cm)
