Description:

Western Asia, Iran/Armenia, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely eight-pointed ceramic tile with glaze work depicting a man on horseback. Birds and a hare surround this figure on a brilliant blue field. A thick black border outlines each arm of the tile, with swirling white arabesques on its interior. The man wears a mint green cloak and seems to stare directly at the viewer. It probably once decorated the wall of a palace or other elite home. In the 19th century, the tile makers in this region became inspired by Safavid style to create their own beautifully artistic tiles. See a similar example at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (623-1868). Size: 0.55" L x 6.5" W x 6.5" H (1.4 cm x 16.5 cm x 16.5 cm)
