Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit or Inupiaq, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful cribbage board, hand-carved from the tusk of a walrus to feature elaborate decoration of zoomorphic imagery. A roaring seal's head projects from one side, mouth open with 2 rows of sharp teeth, while the body displays relief imagery of large fish attacking seals and walruses with a seal lying on his back serving as the finial. Liberal remains of red pigment further highlight the finely-carved decoration. When gold was discovered on the beaches of Nome in 1898 and the town was engulfed by gold seekers - 40,000 by 1900 - a market developed for Alaskan souvenirs. Native artists quickly adapted their traditional skills to meet the demand. Cribbage boards made from walrus tusks and engraved with images of animals, hunters, and other scenes of everyday life became extremely popular and were eagerly purchased as mementos of an Arctic adventure. Size: 2" W x 21" H (5.1 cm x 53.3 cm)
