Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved panel featuring scenes of animal husbandry and hunting! The domesticated animals include cows, pigs, and a horse. The panel is done in low relief with all in profile. The scenes include two men that are tending a pair of head-butting cattle; a seated man milking a tethered cow; and a man wielding an axe while another holds a pig steady for slaughter. The final man is riding a horse and seems to be about to slay a vicious feline, perhaps a tiger. A fabulous glimpse into the relationships between men and domesticated as well as wild animals. The panel likely served as a decorative architectural element. Size: 35.375" L x 1" W x 7" H (89.9 cm x 2.5 cm x 17.8 cm)
