Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, probably Java, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. Wooden kris (keris) handle in the form of a standing demon or deity. He appears to be a transformational type being with exaggerated nose, a curly beard, round bulging eyes, wearing an intricately carved textile patterned sarong with floral belt, and holding an undulating snake-like kris in his right hand and a textile clutch under his left arm. A rare and lovely example. Size: 4"H x 1.5"W + custom stand.

Provenance: Ex-private collection of the late Ami Brown, foremost Israeli art collector and founder of Coca Cola Israel.
