Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Timor Island, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful hand-carved wooden comb inlaid with mother of pearl shells and carved birds at the top. The comb has a curved profile, with the teeth gradually growing longer towards the center. Along the curving handle are inlaid mother of pearl discs and a large geometric motif. Surmounted above are two perched birds flanking a larger bird with wings outstretched made from a shimmering shell. This bird is attached with a brass wire through the handle. A gorgeous comb worn for decoration as well to symbolize status. Size: 6.375" L x 3.75" H (16.2 cm x 9.5 cm); 4.625" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand.
