Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful example of a kris (keris), a type of personal ceremonial sword. The wooden hilt shows an abstract figure with a diamond-shaped head holding both arms against its abdomen, and a small hemispherical brass spacer cap rests between the handle base and the blade. The carbon-steel blade has a straight profile, a projecting hand guard on top, and waves of lighter material hammered into the body. The wooden sheath is made from three separate components which form the guard protector, blade housing, and knob cap. Size: 5.7" W x 17.1" H (14.5 cm x 43.4 cm); length of blade: 11.8" L (30 cm).
