Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th century CE or earlier. A mortar dish known as a cobek, and a special pestle known as ulekan, a utilitarian cooking tool used in food preparation. The ulekan is shaped like a buffalo horn, the shape is particularly efficient for grinding peanuts or making sambal, a spicy chili pepper sauce. Nice signs of heavy use, with a lustrous patina and smooth edges to the abraded areas. As a former colony of the Netherlands, this set is sometimes labeled with the Dutch spelling: "tjobek" and "oelekan." Size of cobek bowl: 7.25" Diameter x 2" H (18.4 cm x 5.1 cm)
