Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumba Island, ca. 19th century CE. A remarkable stone funerary stele known as a penji carved in the form of a figural megalith. Examples like this would have been placed next to the tomb of a high ranking individual and are said to represent slaves and personal attendants whose spirits are believed to accompany the deceased at the funeral. Size: 5.5" L x 6.6" W x 28.1" H (14 cm x 16.8 cm x 71.4 cm); 32" H (81.3 cm) on included custom stand.
