Description:

**Originally Listed At $300**

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. late 19th century CE. A lovely example of an Indonesian kris (keris), a type of ceremonial sword, featuring a dugong bone handle, a brass and wood sheath, and a hammered steel blade with a straight profile and a pointed guard with lovely abstract designs adorning the periphery. Gently raised bands of lighter material swirl across the surface of the blade, granting it a greater complexity of both texture and design. A conical decoration made from brass separates the blade guard from the handle, which is hand-carved from dugong bone to depict a delicate series of anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, and foliate motifs. The brass sheath is lined with a wooden interior and boasts a vertical band of scrolling floral designs on one side, while a lustrous caramel-hued wooden guard protector sits at the base. Size: 20.2" L x 7.3" W (51.3 cm x 18.5 cm); of blade: 15.4" L (39.1 cm)

  • Condition: Wood guard detached from brass sheath. Fold to bottom periphery of brass sheath and some indentations to body but form is still clear. Chipping to wood guard and a few minor chips to bone handle with small area of professional repair to bottom handle. Expected surface wear throughout, commensurate with age and use. Otherwise, nice remaining detail on handle and great patina throughout.
