Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A fine example of a traditional Indonesian ceremonial kris (keris) featuring a sandalwood sheath enveloped in elaborate silver repousse decoration and a curved hilt finely-carved with openwork maskettes. Slide out the straight iron blade from the sheath and be overwhelmed by the rich scent of sandalwood and mesmerizing swirls of nickel that dance across the dark steel. The blade's shoulder is additionally adorned by an ornate edge and lustrous gold foil of abstract avian motifs, while the blade and hilt are separated by a petite spacer disk with clear glass inlays resembling diamonds! Size with sheath: 18.5" L x 5.8" W (47 cm x 14.7 cm); without sheath: 18.1" L x 3.5" W (46 cm x 8.9 cm); of blade only: 14.8" L x 3.5" W (37.6 cm x 8.9 cm); silver quality: 60%
