Description:

Indonesia, Borneo, Kayan or Kenyah peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wooden mask with huge fangs and multiple rows of teeth, staring, open eyes, and a flared nose. Heavy dark red paint gives detail to the fangs, the lips, the nose, heavy eyebrows, and a hair style that includes curls on the sides of the face. The back includes a rod of bamboo to grip with the teeth so the mask can be worn. Two holes have been drilled through the sides of the mask as another method for wearing it.
