Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. first half of the 19th century CE. A forged-iron circumcision clasp used by Islamic boys during initiation rites to become men. The rectangular clasp body is etched with dense foliage motifs accentuated with strips of gilding, and from the neck exhibits similar motifs. From the base rises an abstract avian neck adorned with faceted glass inlays in green and clear hues and inset atop the head is a stunning faceted yellow sapphire. Fine patina envelops this intriguing example of Javanese ceremonial artistry! Size: 0.875" W x 2.875" H (2.2 cm x 7.3 cm)

Regarding the use of circumcision clasps like this example, the National Gallery of Australia explains that, as "an important life-cycle ritual in Islam, circumcision marks the formal entrance of a boy into society. In Indonesia, Islamic customs often combine with older beliefs in the creation and performance of the ceremony. Clasps such as this snake or bird-shaped example were attached to the waist of the boy's sarong and would be worn until his skin healed."

For a nearly identical example with an inlaid diamond, please see The National Gallery of Australia, accession number NGA 90.530.
