Description:

Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine mortar of a substantial size used for pulverizing various ingredients into medicinal substances. The mortar is carved from dense hardwood and has a wide basin resting atop a spool-shaped lower body and a flat base. The walls of the mortar bowl are decorated with a pair of stylized lizards exhibiting thick bodies, sinuous legs with flared feet, curling tails, and conical heads. The interior of the basin is smooth from countless uses, and the exterior boasts a lustrous coffee-hued patina. Size: 7.8" W x 8.1" H (19.8 cm x 20.6 cm).
