Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Dayak peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An endearing monkey statue carved from a single piece of wood, the animal seated on an integral rectangular pedestal, with his hind legs bent in a very human position, and his from arms resting on his feet. The tail curves along the spine, and the hunched shoulders and rounded head that stares forward with incised eyes, suggests a concentrated and watchful energy. This was likely positioned outside or in a home for protection like the ancestral hampatong (also hempatong, empatung, tempatong, or kepatong) figures that were the supernatural guardians of the Dayak religious system. Size: 5" L x 2" W x 7.5" H (12.7 cm x 5.1 cm x 19 cm)
