Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, East Kalimantan, Kenyah Dayak, ca. early to mid-20th century. A beautifully beaded panel known as an aban, created to decorate a rattan baby carrier. The glass trade beads are seed shaped in opaque and semitranslucent black, yellow, white, green, red, blue, and pale pink hues all woven on vegetal fiber threads and depict yellow demon heads flanked by white scrolling tendril like motifs that represent hornbills. Aban panels were attached to rattan baskets that carried children, and the demons warded off evil and provided protection.
