Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A fine example of a traditional Indonesian ceremonial kris (keris). The handle is carved from caramel-hued wood and bears a pair of abstract anthropomorphic masks along the interior curve. A silver-copper alloy hemisphere rests between the handle and the blade guard and contains ten faceted zirconium stones inlaid around the circumference. The iron blade has a straight, tapering profile with a projecting, pointed guard, a narrow tip, and undulating integral bands of lighter material. The sheath is comprised of an interior wooden casing, a large guard protector, and a silver jacket covered in dark patina with a column of foliate motifs in repousse along one side. Size: 18.75" L x 6.125" W (47.6 cm x 15.6 cm); length of blade: 13.75" L (34.9 cm).
