Description:

Central Asia, India/Pakistan, Indo-Persian culture, ca. 19th century CE. A fine battle axe constructed from four attached steel components. The forged axe head bears a crescent blade with projecting terminal points, etched floral motifs on each shoulder, petite birds etched on the blade faces and shoulders, and elegant gilt damascene outlining each etched panel. Soldered to the back of the socketed shoulder is a stylized elephant-dragon head with an open mouth that could shred lighter armor, and attached to the lengthy pole is a hemispherical pommel cap. Size: 8.4" W x 31.75" H (21.3 cm x 80.6 cm)

  • Condition: Pole is reattached within socketing shaft and is perhaps not original to the blade. Very slight bending to blade, with abrasions and fading to etched details and gilding, and minor pitting. Great patina throughout, and faint remains of original gilding.
