Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Central Asia, Pakistan / northern India, Indo-Persian period, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A striking example of an iron khanjar, a type of curved dagger used throughout the Middle East and central Asia, boasting sheath and hilt elaborately adorned with silver inlay and niello arabesque and foliate motifs. The graceful, curved blade presents swirling, almost psychedelic designs of dark and light nickel along with a tondo containing a lotus flower decoration. Six suspension loops protrude from the sides of the sheath, allowing the weapon to be strapped to the belt of its owner. Khanjars were proudly displayed on the belt as sign of wealth and protection, and this example would have been a stunning reminder of the power and affluence of its wearer. Size with sheath: 15.75" L x 3.75" W (40 cm x 9.5 cm); without sheath: 13.75" L x 2.75" W (34.9 cm x 7 cm); of blade only: 8.5" L x 1.75" W (21.6 cm x 4.4 cm)
