Description:

Central Asia, India, ca. mid 19th century CE. A beautifully carved wooden corbel depicting a praying man. The corbel has a flat base that flares outward, its edges carved with lotus flowers in relief. A similarly-shaped piece of wood is at the top of the corbel, forming a frame around the man, who is depicted kneeling and leaning forward, his hands pressed together. He has a long beard and long hair, with large, wide eyes that have remains of pigment on them. Shaivism is one of the traditions of Hinduism, and revere Shiva as the Supreme Being. A corbel like this one would have graced a Shaivic temple. Size: 2.9" L x 9.5" W x 13.75" H (7.4 cm x 24.1 cm x 34.9 cm)
