Description:

South Asia, India, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful hand-carved wooden panel featuring Vishnu, Hindu Preserver of the Universe, in relief within an arch. He stands on a shelf with his legs crossed in a relaxed pose. In his four arms are attributes, including a mace in his lower right hand and the weapon represents the power of the law. Elsewhere, his body is adorned with ornately carved jewels and clothing, including a closely fitting dhoti secured at his waist by a hanging girdle. Upon his head is a conical headdress, an artistic convention popularly used to portray Vishnu. He is slightly recessed under a torana arch with scrolling motifs. This panel is a wonderful devotional piece that may have resided in a home shrine or temple. Size: 6.5" L x 2" W x 13.125" H (16.5 cm x 5.1 cm x 33.3 cm); 15" H (38.1 cm) on included custom stand.
