Description:

Southeast Asia, India, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful hand-carved wooden architectural bracket or corbel element for a temple or other important building featuring a peacock and scrolling foliate and paisley shapes. The thick, rectangular form has a flat base and verso, the frontside carved in high relief - all from a single block of wood. Atop the bird's curved head is a flower shape with a tubular hole bored through to the verso. Magnificent on its own, this peacock has developed a patina from exposure to the elements, but retains some light pigments, indicating it was brightly painted at one time. Size: 7.5" L x 6.25" W x 15" H (19 cm x 15.9 cm x 38.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
