Description:

Central Asia, India, ca. late 19th century CE. A fascinating object, called an "opium scale" by Westerners and a "dotchin" in Asia, actually a scale used for many different purposes. The small brass scale is contained within a comma-shaped wooden case that twists open to reveal a hollowed-out area for holding the scale. The exterior of the case is carved with high relief flowers and it is painted red on both interior and exterior. Size with case closed: 8.25" W x 3.65" H (21 cm x 9.3 cm)
