South Asia, Southern India, Tamil Nadu / Kerala, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of hand carved wooden sculptures of winged celestial figures similar to angels known as Garudas, standing atop-lotus pedestals. One is male and the other is female, with garlands draped over their shoulders, likely used as temple architectural elements. Human-bird hybrids known as Garuda are associated with Vishnu, serving as his mounts and as demigods and defenders of faith. Size: 15" L x 6" W x 19.75" H (38.1 cm x 15.2 cm x 50.2 cm); 22.75" H (57.8 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Repaired, left hand on man reattached with visible break line, and right arm is reattached on the shoulder, visible break line. Wings on woman reattached with visible break lines. Both wings are reinforced with metal brackets. Missing fingers and stable fissures and cracks on both. Paint and remains of pigment on verso.
