Description:

Central Asia, southern India, ca. 19th century CE. A steel katar, or "punch dagger," featuring an H-shaped horizontal hand grip decorated with exquisite gold false-damascening (overlay) with gold purity ranging from 51% to 57.4% (equivalent to 12K+ to 13K+). The thick, triangular blade extends below the user's knuckles and was originally designed to pierce armor, making it an ideal weapon for punching with the full weight of the body rather than thrusting as with a sword or staff. Unique to southern Asia, katars served both practical and symbolic purposes. They were status symbols, with the elite often carrying ornamental examples - such as this one - as intimidating accessories to display wealth and provide self-protection. This katar comes with a triangular leather and wood sheath that fits over the blade. Size in sheath: 17.5" L x 3.3" W (44.4 cm x 8.4 cm); blade: 9.125" L x 2" W (23.2 cm x 5.1 cm); gold quality: 51% to 57.4% (equivalent to 12K+ to 13K+)
