Description:

Central Asia, India, ca. first half of the 19th century CE. A forged-carbon-steel punching dagger known as a katar (also katara or bundi dagger) with a horizontal, H-shaped hand guard and a chevron-shaped shoulder. The large triangular blade has two narrow halves with hollow interior wells that house a third, solid blade that is revealed only when the handle trigger is squeezed. Intricate motifs engraved atop the blade wells, hand guard, and lateral bars are overlaid with silvering and give this weapon a distinguished, personalized presentation. Size: 16.4" L x 3.6" W (41.7 cm x 9.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
