Description:

Central Asia, India, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A heavy red sandstone head painted black on most of its surface, once part of a larger statue that was carved in high relief and projected outward from a wall. Most of the surface of the head is carved, with the back left blank, where it was connected to a wall, probably in a temple. Imagine this beautiful statue against an edge, its serious face gazing out at those walking past. The style of the face suggests a British colonial influence on the artist who created it, especially around the mouth, but the piece is also clearly of the Indian tradition with its curved eyebrows and large eyes. The figure wears a tall, conical headdress above carved stylized, combed back hair. Size: 4.45" L x 4.1" W x 7.75" H (11.3 cm x 10.4 cm x 19.7 cm); 10.2" H (25.9 cm) on included custom stand.

#122636

  • Condition: Light scratching on the surface, with wear to pigment, especially on the top of the piece. The back of the piece is not carved and rough, as if it was a high relief, and the head was once part of a larger statue, so the neck is uneven.
