Description:

South Asia/Southeast Asia, India/Burma (present day Myanmar) border, Nagaland, Sumi Naga people, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful leaded bronze statuette of Buddha seated in lotus position and flanked by a pair of attendants. The 9 hooded heads of Mucalinda, the mighty king of serpents, rises behind the 3 figures as they sit atop the snake's coils. This is a fascinating and rare example considering 95% of the Naga people were converted to Christianity by the missionaries of the 19th century.
