Description:

**Originally Listed At $400**

South Asia, Southwestern India, Mysore State, ca. 19th century CE or earlier. A beautifully preserved manuscript panel with Kannada script on a palm leaf. The page is pierced in the center for threading on a cord with other pages that would have been bound between wooden slat covers to keep the leaves flat. Note that the writer left plenty of space around the piercings to prevent tearing or loss to the text. The palm is mounted in a wood frame under glass and is ready to display. A label on the verso indicates the script is 13th century, however, the condition suggests this may be a later copy of an earlier text. The use of paper and printing presses replaced most palm leaf manuscripts in the 19th century. Size of palm leaf: 13.5" L x 1.5" W (34.3 cm x 3.8 cm); frame: 22" L x 8" W (55.9 cm x 20.3 cm)
