Description:

Central Asia, India, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden shrine displaying a standing effigy of Vishnu, one of the principal deities of Hinduism, known as the preserver in the Hindu trinity (Trimurti) which also includes Brahma and Shiva. Vishnu stands within an arched doorway and a pair of tiered columns atop an integral rectangular platform, holds a large spear and a pair of implements in his hands, and wears a simple loincloth and an elaborate cape. His sensitive visage is composed of almond-shaped eyes, a wide nose, full lips, and ornamented ears, all beneath an intricate headdress. Size: 6.75" W x 7.875" H (17.1 cm x 20 cm); 9.7" H (24.6 cm) on included custom stand.
