Central Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A copper bronze depiction of a Sadhu, a holy man holding a walking staff. A winding serpent is depicted in relief on the integral rectangular base, and the figure itself exhibits exaggerated limbs and an enormous lobed head. In Hinduism, a sadhu is a religious ascetic or holy person. Although the vast majority of sadhus are yogis, not all yogis are sadhus. The sadhu is solely dedicated to achieving moksha (liberation), the fourth and final ashrama (stage of life), though meditation and contemplation of brahman. Sadhus oftentimes wear saffron-hued clothing, symbolizing their sannyasa (renunciation). Size: 2.625" H (6.7 cm).
