Description:

India, from Orissa/Odisha (eastern part of subcontinent), ca. 19th century CE. Copper bronze depiction of Sadhu, holding a walking staff. Serpent depicted in relief on base. In Hinduism, a sadhu is a religious ascetic or holy person. Although the vast majority of sadhus are yogis, not all yogis are sadhus. The sadhu is solely dedicated to achieving mok?a (liberation), the fourth and final asrama (stage of life), through meditation and contemplation of brahman. Sadhus often wear saffron-coloured clothing, symbolising their sanyasa (renunciation).  2-1/2"H x 1-1/2"W.
