South Asia, India, Maharashtra, ca. 19th century CE. A fine brass mukhalinga sculpture of Shiva's head seated on a tiered throne, with the flaring, hooded head of the serpent Sheesha (Sheshanaga or Adishesha) providing a protective awning over the gatekeeper deity of Lord Shiva as it rises behind him. The square pedestal has a projecting tab at the front with a recumbent Nandi, the bull that Shiva rides, is seated upon the top, facing Shiva. The lingam (also linga, ling, Shiva linga, Shiv ling, meaning "mark," "sign," or "inference") is a stylized masculine or phallic representation of the Hindu god Shiva that is usually ovoid or cylindrical pillar. A mukhalinga is a literal translation of "linga with a face" and here, Shiva's face forms the mukhalinga, with large almond-shaped eyes, an arched brow, a triangular nose, ornamented ears, a mustache, earrings, and turban headdress. Using a mukhalinga or a cover over a regular lingam protected the viewer from the full embodied of Shiva's power. Size: 3.4" W x 6.5" H (8.6 cm x 16.5 cm)
