**First Time At Auction**

South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A brass home shrine, a miniature temple known as a Mandir, resting on four feet with a front porch / offering area and columns, with a covered alcove to display the deity statues known as murtis. The side and roof panels are tooled and pierced to let light, shadows, and incense oil lamp smoke move across the interior. The top is guarded by a pair of peacocks, sacred symbols of many of the Hindu gods and represents immortality. These altar shrines are an important part of Hindu culture, a small devotional place to preform daily puja (pooja) rites and honor the deities that watched over the home.
