Description:

Central Asia, India, Madhya Pradesh, Bastar, ca. 19th century CE. A fine horse and rider cast from brass that are highly stylized and ornately decorated. The rider presents sitting atop a conical stool, wears four V-shaped necklaces with circular roundels on his shoulders, and dons a series of concentric neck rings while holding both arms to a pair of laterally protruding bars. His face exhibits drop-form eyes flanking the triangular nose, thick lips, and a wavy cap. The majestic steed poses atop a rectangular platform and has concentric ringlets on each leg, a nicely detailed saddle, and braided reins connected to the bridle. Size (horse): 4.7" L x 2.2" W x 4.125" H (11.9 cm x 5.6 cm x 10.5 cm); (rider): 1.9" W x 3.3" H (4.8 cm x 8.4 cm)

  • Condition: Rider has losses to back of head and laterally protruding bars, and horse has losses to corners of plinth as shown. Both figures have minor abrasions and encrustations. Nice patina throughout and faint remains of red pigment on horse.
