Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Central Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved alabaster relief depiction of Hanuman, a monkey-form deity who is famous for his adventures in the Hindu Sanskrit poem "The Ramayana" ("Rama's Journey"). The figure stands in a triumphant pose while holding a mace in one hand, a large attribute in the other hand, and standing with one leg upon a prone human. The simian-style face features almond-shaped eyes, a rounded snout, tall ears adorned with circular ornaments, and a striated crown. Traces of red pigmentation are visible across the head and archway behind Hanuman and suggest the carving was at one time adorned with bright pigments. Size: 2.5" W x 4.5" H (6.4 cm x 11.4 cm).
