Description:

Central Asia, India or Sri Lanka, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A matched pair of paduka, India's oldest form of footwear. These examples may have belonged to a bride's trousseau, with elaborate carving and a high panel. The soles of each are in the form of a serpent that loops around the edges, with large floral motifs in the center. These appear to be made from teak, one of the finer woods used to make this type of sandal. Size of each: 9.5" L x 3.7" W x 3.25" H (24.1 cm x 9.4 cm x 8.3 cm)
