Central Asia, Western India, Gujarat, Kutcch Bhuj style, ca. 1850 CE. A round-bodied bronze bottle capped by a threaded 24K gold lid with a beautiful stamped decoration of animals in a hunting scene surrounding by sinuous vines and blooming flowers. The body and neck of the bottle are wrapped in crimson-hued cotton cloth with gilded thread wrapped around its frilled upper portion. Chari bottles were used by merchants, explorers, and travelers to carry large amounts of holy water during trading expeditions which could last months or even years in the 19th century CE. Traditional Chari bottles are bedecked with silver embellishments, making this gold-adorned example one of extreme rarity! Size: 6" W x 11.45" H (15.2 cm x 29.1 cm); quality of gold: 24K; weight of gold cap: 122.9 grams.

  • Condition: Small losses around bottom of gold cap. Top of cap is dented inward. Excellent preservation of artwork on the gold cap. A few small stains on the red cloth. The bronze bottle has beautiful dark green patina.
