Description:

Central Asia, Himalayan region, Northern India, Tibet or Nepal, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A fascinating hand-carved wooden staff with an open hand raised in a gesture with the thumb folded across the open palm, possibly a mudra that had religious meaning. The length of the shaft is relief carved with two sets of bands and a tapered area just before the rounded finial pommel. The length of this piece indicates it was likely a tool for ritualistic or domestic use, such as a ghee butter churn rod, rather than a staff or cane. Size: 25.5" L x 1.5" W (64.8 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
