Description:

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden tapa beater exhibiting a tapered handle and a rectangular beating head. Each face of the beater head is incised with a series of vertical grooves that assist the artisan in spreading the force of each blow out evenly across the delicate tapa bark fibers. Tapa cloths are traditionally made by beating the inner bark of mulberry or similar trees until it is soft and pliable, and then painted using a palette of naturally occurring pigments. This example is a nice utilitarian tool that was used to create true works of art. Size: 13.375" L x 1.25" W (34 cm x 3.2 cm)
