Description:

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, West Maui, Lahaina, ca. 19th century CE. A handsome whaling period cane made from a shaft of whale bone with a curved handle, a nickel-brass cuff, and an iron support on the tip. The length is a tapered, cylindrical piece with a second slightly curved bone forming the handle, and the nickel fitting covering and supporting the joint where the sections meet. An iron ring is riveted to the end for support and additional durability, and the whole cane is heavily polished with darker striations and inclusions across the surface. The town of Lahaina was a destination for whaling vessels from Europe, Asia, and the Americas to replenish supplies. The sailors that came ashore would trade and sell their scrimshawed and whittled pieces formed from whale and even walrus ivory. This cane is certainly a unique statement piece for any 19th century dandy or distinguished sailor to lean on. Size: 33.5" L x 4" W (85.1 cm x 10.2 cm)
