North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A porous piece of volcanic stone carved into a fishing weight. The sinker has a shallow groove encircling the center creating a top-heavy shape, like a bread loaf. A line and hook would be attached to the weight, often with a large cowrie shell, and then placed in shallow water to catch octopus or squid. Size: 2.5" L x 2" W (6.4 cm x 5.1 cm); 2.5" H (6.4 cm) on included custom stand.
