Description:

South Pacific, Hawaii, ca. second half of the 19th century CE. A beautiful example of a calabash - a serving bowl named for a gourd shape - made from fine-grained Hawaiian kou wood. The smooth interior curves gently with the rounded walls, and the thick rim hangs over the basin with a lip meant to hold a lid. Hawaiian royalty often valued specific calabashes - even going so far as to name them after royal individuals - and until the early 19th century they were reserved for elites in society. Prior to the 19th century, they were made from stone and coral tools, carved from kou, milo, and kamani trees most commonly. Size: 12.375" W x 5" H (31.4 cm x 12.7 cm).
