Description:

North Pacific, Hawaii, ca. late 19th century CE. A lovely, well-preserved wooden calabash - a serving bowl named for the gourd that it resembles, though it is made from kou, a beautiful Hawaiian hardwood. Traditionally, these vessels were carved from the wood of trees such as kou, milo, and kamani, using stone and coral tools. This example presents with a simple and elegant rounded form that widens just above the base before gently tapering toward the narrower rim. A rich red glow emanates from the polished sides, as natural bands of woodgrain dance across its smoothly carved surface. Hawaiian royalty often valued specific calabash bowls - even going so far as to name them after royal individuals - and until the early 19th century they were reserved for elites in society. Size: 5" in diameter x 3.5" H (12.7 cm x 8.9 cm)
